The biting surfaces of adult molars have deep, narrow grooves that a toothbrush bristle physically cannot reach. That is where the majority of decay in children begins.
A sealant flows into those grooves and sets hard, leaving a smooth surface that can actually be cleaned. It is painless, takes a few minutes per tooth and involves no drilling or injection.
We usually place sealants soon after the first adult molars appear, around age six, and again around age twelve.
